A River

“The glorious Lord will be unto us a place of broad rivers and streams.” — Isaiah 33:21

Broad rivers and streams produce fertility, and abundance in the land. Places near broad rivers are remarkable for the variety of their plants and their plentiful harvests. God is all this to His Church. Having God she has abundance. What can she ask for that He will not give her? What want can she mention which He will not supply? “In this mountain shall the Lord of Hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things.” Want ye the bread of life? It drops like manna from the sky. Want ye refreshing streams? The rock follows you, and that Rock is Christ. If you suffer any want it is your own fault; if you are straitened you are not straitened in Him, but in your own bowels. Broad rivers and streams also point to commerce. Our glorious Lord is to us a place of heavenly merchandize. Through our Redeemer we have commerce with the past; the wealth of Calvary, the treasures of the covenant, the riches of the ancient days of election, the stores of eternity, all come to us down the broad stream of our gracious Lord. We have commerce, too, with the future. What galleys, laden to the water’s edge, come to us from the millennium! What visions we have of the days of heaven upon earth! Through our glorious Lord we have commerce with angels; communion with the bright spirits washed in blood, who sing before the throne; nay, better still, we have fellowship with the Infinite One. Broad rivers and streams are specially intended to set forth the idea of security. Rivers were of old a defence. Oh! beloved, what a defence is God to His Church! The devil cannot cross this broad river of God. How he wishes he could turn the current, but fear not, for God abideth immutably the same. Satan may worry, but he cannot destroy us; no galley with oars shall invade our river, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.

Back Down Memory Lane

While having some time with the Lord in prayer, I thought about the prayers I pray for fellow brothers and sisters. I pray that you will grow in the wisdom, knowledge, & understanding of who Jesus is. I pray that as laborers you would be encouraged, strengthened, & obedient. And sometimes I pray that you will not be ensnared by the lust of this world.

Then I began to think about our brothers and sisters who struggle greatly with things of the world, ungodly things. Why is it so hard, I wondered? Are they not praying hard enough, is there unbelief, do they like it and truly don’t want to stop, is God mad at them and won’t deliver them, are they praying the wrong prayers? I have talked and prayed with many who struggle with various addictions. I still come back to the same question?

                             WHERE IS JESUS IN ALL OF THIS?

I know that many will see that question and say things like: “Its not that easy” or “obviously you have never struggled with addiction”

I beg to differ. I had a really strong addiction to the most deadly, poisonous, harmful, life altering addiction ever known.  Was it Meth? Alcohol? Pornography? Yes and no.

My addiction of choice was……… SIN.

There was a time in my life when all I wanted was to please my flesh. If that meant drugs on that day….then drugs it was. Im sure you get my point.

Then something changed, I no longer wanted what my flesh wanted. I began to disagree with what the world said it meant to have a “good time”. I began to crave the word of God 19700454_sand knew I needed to feed it. I desired to be around people who desired things of Christ and found great joy in it. To talk with the Lord in prayer about the struggle trumped the memory of what the opposite was like.  Now don’t get me wrong, sin is geared to smell good, taste good, and look good. The temporary rush that comes from satisfying it is serious business. But, the eternal joy and peace that comes from a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ trumps that temporary fix every time. Are we given liberty to engage in different things ? Yes.  Before you take advantage of your God given liberties, ask yourself a few questions:

  1. Why do I want to do this?
  2. Should I be doing this?
  3. Am I concerned about who might see me?
  4. How will I feel about this tomorrow?
  5. Can I pray while doing it?

I was talking with one of my teenage sons and I asked him had he been delivered from drugs and alcohol. He looked at me with a confused look on his face as if I was crazy. Now my son is a professing born again believer, homeschooled, loves Jesus, plays video games, soccer and loves his parents. So you can understand why he was initially quite confused by my question. But he thought for a minute and answered,” yes mom, yes I have been delivered from the addiction of drugs and alcohol.”

My son has never tasted alcohol or drugs in his life. But because of what he knows Jesus did for him, he has been delivered and set free from the bondage of sin. He doesn’t have to taste, smell or touch in order know its deadly. He just has to remember what Jesus did for him, rest in that and the addictions have no power.

In closing. If we look around us, study Gods word, keep our focus on Christ and his righteousness, and remember what we have been saved from, our problems with addictions  will be nothing but a memory.

Today Darrell & I celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. When I rolled out of bed this morning I knew today was extra special. Not only did The Lord allow us another day, but he gave us 20 years of marriage to celebrate.

We DID

After 5 months of us knowing each other Darrrell asked me to be his wife. Obviously I said yes, but I did without thinking twice. I didn’t take any of the precautionary steps to “safe guard my heart” or “being sure he was the one”. I knew he was the one. So, without a life preserver or escape plan, I took the plunge. We DID.

We DO

Have we had some troubled waters? YES. Have we had some frustrating moments? YES. Have we been confused, upset, hurt, or grieved at times? YES, YES, YES & YES again. But what I do know is –  the smiles, laughs, love, triumph, grace, maturity, forgiveness, comfort & peace that the Lord has blessed us with shines. It shines so bright that when I look at the scars I don’t remember how I got them. I guess if I tried really hard to remember  all the gory details, I could. But what good would that do? No thanks. The blessed gift of forgiveness & grace that has been given to us, is one one of the most amazing gifts we can give to others. Especially our spouse. Thats our life. We DO, We find ways to serve each other with joy. We embrace each day as a precious gift from the Lord and excitedly wait to see what HE has for us.

So as we move forward and start the next 20 years (Lord willing), I look back and reflect on where we were, how we felt, how we viewed life and each other. And with that I can wholeheartedly declare that We WILL; continue to serve the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul and mind, Extend grace to each other,  Serve each other with no strings attached, Thank God for each other, Serve others, Laugh together, Cry together and Love each other the way God says we should.

One of the greatest gifts from God (next to Him giving me JESUS) is my marriage. Im so blessed because I said yes. We DID, We DO & We WILL
